Skip The Diamond, Three Alternative Gemstones To Wear

April 27, 2017

More and more women are choosing to rock a ring without a diamond in the center. Whether it’s a gift for yourself or an engagement ring, I've got three great alternative options that will hold their own next to any diamond.

Sapphire

The most popular alternative gemstone is definitely blue sapphire. It's a great option because it's a hard gemstone, so it's really safe to wear every day. Gemstone hardness is measured with the Mohs scale. Diamonds are a 10 and sapphires are a 9 on the Mohs scale. Sapphires come in others colors aside from blue, anything from purple to orange.

Aquamarine

If you're looking for a blue gemstone but don't like sapphire, there are other options. Aquamarine is one of my favorites because it's pretty hard, 7.5 to 8 on the Mohs scale, and it comes in a range of blue colors. Aquamarine ranges from pale blue to a seafoam green. While the intensity of the blue color can vary, lighter colors are more common. Aquamarine is in the same family as emerald but, because emeralds tend to be heavily included, they're very fragile. Aquamarine doesn't tend to be nearly as included, so it can handle to daily wear.

Blue Zircon

Blue zircon is another beautiful option. Like aquamarine, the color can range in intensity, but unlike aquamarine more intense blue colors are typical.  Blue zircon is a bit softer. It sits around a 6 to 7.5 on the Mohs scale. You'll need to be a bit more careful with blue zircon during everyday wear. You'll definitely want to take a blue zircon ring off if you're doing a task where you'll be working with your hands a lot.

Other Gemstones

I must have been in a blue mood when I picked these gemstones. These blue options are just the tip of the iceberg. From ruby red to the color changing gemstone, alexandrite, there are more options than you can imagine. If you want help finding a gemstone you love, call, chat, or email me. I'm always happy to talk!
